Plain and clear advice
Corporate Social Responsibility
Wheelers is committed to active Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Donating time, energy, expertise and money is part of the integral fabric of the firm.
Our approach to CSR is an holistic one. We look at the the money we can give to and/or raise for charities; we ensure our environmental policy is in line with our strategy for a sustainable business; and we give advice and support to the local communities in which we operate.
During the many years we have been engaged in undertaking pro bono work we have found the benefits to be completely two-way – making a difference not only to the communities in which we work, but also to our own staff by giving them a greater perspective on the world outside law as well as the opportunity to make a real social impact.
Our commitment to pro bono work also extends to lawyers from the firm supporting Free Legal Advice Clinics at various local Citizens Advice Bureaus including Ash Vale, Farnborough, Camberley and Aldershot. Telephone support in areas such as employment law is also provided on request to bureaus in Farnham and Woking.
Charity and Community
Our lawyers and staff are often asked to be volunteers, trustees and governors given their legal training. Whilst any decision as to whether to accept such offers must ultimately be a personal decision for individuals as the commitment involved will often entail significant demands on their personal time we encourage all of our people to play an active role in the community in which we live and serve
During the course of the year we engage in various activities intended to help generate funds for charities ranging from sponsored walks, runs, obstacle courses etc to raffles and whatever other fun and innovative schemes we can think up.
Some of the charities our staff support include:
A number of years ago we lost a hugely respected and cherished Partner to cancer. The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice provided invaluable support and assistance to her and her family at the end of her life. Since then we have been proud to support the Hospice and participate in a number of fundraising initiatives to help generate the much needed funds they require to continue their excellent work.
One of the key initiatives in which we have participated for each of the past few years is the Phyllis Tuckwell Make a Will Fortnight. This has enabled us to generate donations of several thousand pounds to the Hospice each year. Last year (2018) we raised over £5000 by donating our time for free in preparing Wills for clients in return for their donating the fee which they would otherwise have paid to us direct to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
Community Matters Partnership Project
From March 2017 Wheelers joined with a number of other companies in the area to support an initiative called the Community Matters Partnership Project (CMPP). CMPP is a network of responsible, local and caring companies working together to support the needs of the community.
By working collectively in this way, we can leverage local business support and resources to make fundamental social and economic changes to the area. The project is funded by the partners and coordinated by The Sixth Form College, Farnborough. Since the initiative was first established in 2010 it has succeeded in raising over £200,000 for local charities and projects and volunteered more than 50,000 hours of time, skill, expertise and resources.
Several staff from Wheelers joined hundreds of others in the Twilight Run along the run way at Farnborough Airport on Saturday 1st July 2017 to support the Community Matters Partnership Project. Click on the link to view the coverage on ITV news:
We are proud to announce that the funds generated by the local Community Matters Partnership Project (CMPP) which included substantial contributions from Partner businesses such as Wheelers enabled representatives of the Partner businesses to provide grants amounting to almost £30,000 to support local schools and charities with projects designed to benefit children and young people in our community.
